BEE AWARENESS!

Report of Event on Sunday July 4th 2021  10:30 am – 12:30 pm

This was Discoverers’ first live event since the pandemic struck. The weather did its best to put us off but without success! Eight families enjoyed a great morning in the Holly Lodge Centre garden and nature trail studying living honey bees in a mobile hive, brought along by local bee keepers, Gill and Simon Silvester.

The children, matched by their parents, were spellbound as they watched the bees at work inside the hive, and learned about the intricate life cycle of workers and drones, and the all-important Queen.

In spite of hovering clouds we were also able to walk through HLC’s very attractive nature trail where the children were delighted to discover tiny frogs resident in the bug hotel.

This is the second time Discoverers has run this event and it is looks likely to become a firm favourite!

Here are some interesting facts about Honey Bees

Honeybees, Bumblebees, Solitary, Leafcutter, and Hairy-footed flower bees….
There are over 20,000 species of bee world-wide, 270 in the UK alone. Bees are the perfect pollinators, essential for a healthy environment. Without them we are in trouble!
